What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?
MLD is a technique that treats the accumulation of fluid that can occur after the lymph system is compromised. It most often happens after surgery, but can also be caused by trauma, poor diet, medications, stress, or anxiety.
The lymphatic system's job is to filter out debris in our bodies, eventually removing it, and to produce new clean lymph fluid to aid the immune system in destroying pathogens. Our lymphatic system must periodically be cleared of debris that accumulates there. Think of a small stream that, over the seasons, accumulates twigs and leaves and the occasional large stone. The stream becomes a trickle. MLD is the park ranger who goes in and removes the blockages to allow the water to flow freely again. If there is a large boulder that cannot be removed (large amounts of scar tissue), then the MLD will re-route the flow of stagnated lymphatic fluid around blocked areas to be filtered and excreted out of the body. By de-congesting our lymphatic system, we achieve a more effective immunity and a healthy body.
I am one of the first Certified Cosmetic Surgery Therapist in New Jersey (via Norton School), having completed over 48 hours of in-person and hands on training out of NYC. I also have a certificate in Manual Lymphatic Drainage (via the MLD Institute) in the Vodder technique and additional advanced technique training for plastic surgery (via ACOLS), which means I have completed individual classes in Plastic Surgery Procedures, Medical Spa, Pregnancy, Sports, Scars, and more, all adding up to over 120 hours of in-person training. When looking for a MLD therapist, ALWAYS make sure they have a certificate so you know they have had proper training in this specific modality.
What To Expect
Manual Lymph Drainage is gentle and relaxing, but has powerful effects. It consists of a slow, rhythmic progression of light strokes, and some gentle stretching of the skin. Clearing superficial congestion from the lymph system creates a vacuum effect, pulling up fluid from deeper, more distant parts of the body. Lymph fluid starts moving and flowing, instead of remaining stagnant.
The relaxing Lymphatic Drainage treatment is performed on bare skin, with no oil. Draping of clients according to established industry guidelines is practiced. You can expect an increased need to urinate soon after a treatment and for several hours thereafter, as excess fluids that were moved from the tissues are now ready to be excreted as urine. We recommend that you drink water before and after an MLD session to replenish fluids mobilized during this treatment. Measurements may taken, along with photos, to show progress.
Sessions
The scheduling of sessions is unique to each client. After surgery, sessions are conducted 3-4 days in the first 1 week. the first session can occur 48 hours after, as long as there are no complications such as infection. A single session will provide immediate results, but to encourage ongoing healing, multiple sessions within the week will help clear out the system and provide the client with far better and longer lasting results. The first session will be scheduled for a 90 minute time frame, as part of the session will involve consulting and photographs.
The second week will most likely be 2-3 sessions, and the following weeks will be 1 session. Most clients get the most benefit from a minimum of 10 sessions, spread out over 6-8 weeks. Additional weeks may be recommended if the client had multiple surgeries, if fluid has been stagnant for some time, or if improper aftercare has slowed healing. Monthly maintenance sessions are also recommended for the first 6-8 months after surgery.
If the client is preparing for surgery, it is recommended to have 2 sessions in the week prior to surgery (no sessions 24 hours before). This will prepare the body for with the cleaned out immune system and help reduce the after effects of surgery, such as swelling, pain, and bruising. Think of it as starting a marathon with training vs no training. You want to be in the best shape you can be for surgery.
Please prepare for a session by drinking a little more water than you normally would in the hours before.
