Sports Massage is a type of massage designed for highly active people to improve athletic performance, speed recovery, and can be utilized by all individuals who participate in any athletic and/or exercise program. The purpose is to help improve conditioning and maintain peak performance. Engaging in sports can be harsh on the body and can some times lead to injuries in both the short and long term. Sports Massage enhances performance and prolongs a sports career by helping to prevent injury, reduce pains and swelling in the body, relax the mind, increase flexibility, and dramatically improve recovery rates. Sports Massage is also highly effective in aiding the rapid recovery of an athlete from an injury by encouraging greater kinesthetic awareness and in turn promoting the body's natural immune function.
Research has also shown that individuals who participate in exercise and athletic programs can benefit from sports massage therapy given by professional massage therapists working within their scope of practice.
A typical Sports Massage session will start with a discussion gathering information on your athletic performance (for example, how many miles do you run per week), what your injury history is, what your current issues are, what your expectations are, and if you are currently training for an event. The massage may include some or all of the following: deep muscular tissue work, fascial releases, trigger point releases, and stretching.
